About Sandy Smith
I am a personal finance influencer focused on improving the lives of the underprivileged. In 2009 I founded the award nominated blog, Yes I Am Cheap which helps people save money, get out of debt and improve their income so that they can live their best financial lives.
In 2013, recognizing that people of color had not benefited from the recovery of the great recession, I reached out to my friends in finance to help me raise awareness about the plight of people of color. We created Colorful Money Magazine and formed the Elevate Mastermind which helps financial influencers of color better reach the audience that we serve. The mastermind has over 45 members including Tiffany Aliche, Jason Vitug and Patrice Cunningham Washington – all of whom serve on the steering committee the Elevate Influencer conference, the first of which was held in 2019.
Since I clearly was not busy, I formed the Hustle Crew in 2015 which helps my audience identify ways to make extra money that they can dedicate towards debt servicing or just living a more financially fulfilled life. There are nearly 10,000 members of that group which is more than 90% female.
About the Name
Don’t tell anyone, but Sandy isn’t actually my legal name – it’s just what my mom has called me my entire life. I figured, since all of my friends and family call me that name, why not use it for with my friends on the internet? Smith. Well, Smith is just part of my pen name.
I’m a mom of one super energetic toddler who makes frequent appearances in my Instagram feed. My husband and I live in New York with our dog and truck. Vroom!

I am a Certified Financial Education instructor with an MBA in Small Business/Entrepreneurship whose main focus was debt reduction and wealth building. This all started when I woke up to find myself in debt by over $120,000 with nothing to show for it. I vowed to pay every penny that I owed without declaring bankruptcy.
By far the most effective thing that lead to my debt repayment was making additional money. Although I was working for a Fortune 100 company doing strategy and planning, it just didn’t pay enough to cover all of my New York City sides bills. I switched careers into Human Resources and payroll, for my certification and still didn’t make enough.
It was though my various side hustles and micro business that my debt was really repaid. I realized, that like me, many people could only cut so much out of their budgets.
Now, I am focused on helping others earn as much as possible – outside of their jobs because believe me, I’ve had to fire enough innocent people who wondered where their next paychecks would come from. I want to make sure that your income from your job isn’t the only thing that you depend on.
My classes are designed to get you up and running and bringing in money quickly with the least investment possible. My goal is to help as many people as possible reach financial independence.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_single_image image=”33000″ img_size=”full” alignment=”center” style=”vc_box_shadow_border”][/vc_column][/vc_row]]]>
